PE
INTENT
Here at the Paston Ridings we believe that Physical Education is essential to ensure that children attain optimum physical and emotional health. Our intention is to deliver high-quality teaching and learning that is targeted to inspire all children to succeed in physical education.
We want our children to learn how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, exhibiting trust and commitment together while understanding the values of fair play to embed life-long values. The PE curriculum aims to develop a high level of physical literacy within our children, along with the motivation to move that will prepare our children to lead healthy, active lifestyles.
IMPLEMENTATION
Our PE curriculum will be implemented through a range of well differentiated sporting activities that include invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding games, dance, gymnastics, outdoor and adventurous activities as well as swimming for our Key Stage 2 children. The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
Pupils will participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, with each class learning two sports per half term. Outside of curriculum time a wide range of extracurricular activities both in lunch times and after school clubs, which are targeted to encompass a wide range of children with a variety of activities.
In key stage 2 children have the opportunity to lead physical activity for others in roles such as Sports Ambassadors and House Captains.. Additionally, on sports day many children are used as sports leaders to assist in the effective running of the day. Our school is also highly active in intra-school competition through our house competitions, as well as inter-school competition in the local and county levels. Through these competitions our children gain an understanding of the world of competitive sport and how best to work as effective team members.
In Key Stage 2, Year 4 and Year 6 children swim for a full term of instruction in order to accelerate their progression. Additionally, within our curriculum we plan a range of out of school opportunities for the children to access a variety of sports. These include rock climbing, golf and water sports. Furthermore, children are taught archery and fencing in order to provide access to alternative sports.
IMPACT
We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports and physical activities through high-quality teaching that is both engaging and fun for our learners. From these lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, and they also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills to become effective participants in a wide range of sports and to foster a love for sport that will be lifelong.
Our children will grow up to live happy and healthy lives by utilising the skills and knowledge that they have acquired through Physical Education.
