COMPUTING
INTENT
At Paston Ridings, our vision for computing is to deliver a transformative and enriching educational experience that empowers our students to thrive in an ever-evolving digital landscape. Grounded in our core values of excellence and holistic development, our computing curriculum is meticulously designed to cultivate a vibrant community of inquisitive and resilient learners equipped to confidently navigate and shape their digital futures.
We are devoted to nurturing the whole person, embedding essential skills such as creativity, critical thinking and digital responsibility. Our termly guiding questions— What makes us who we are?, How does adversity inspire courage and creative possibilities? and In an ever-changing world, how can the choices we make have an impact?— inspire students to recognise the relevance of computing in their lives and its profound potential to drive societal transformation.
IMPLEMENTATION
Computing is integrated across all key stages, from EYFS to KS2, adhering to the National Curriculum while leveraging the outstanding resources and expertise offered by the Teach Computing initiative. Our curriculum encompasses vital themes such as computer science, coding, hardware, software and digital media, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience. We embrace a dynamic, hands-on, project-based approach that immerses students in practical coding exercises, collaborative projects and real-world problem-solving scenarios. Activities range from engaging unplugged sessions that develop computational thinking to hands-on experiences with digital tools like Micro Bits, Crumble Kits and data loggers.
Continuous professional development for our educators, combined with diverse formative assessments—including weekly Kahoot quizzes and post-assessments—ensures that lessons are not only engaging but also tailored to meet the unique needs of each student. We also prioritise digital literacy and online safety education, equipping students with the knowledge they need for responsible technology use.
IMPACT
By the end of their primary education, students at Paston Ridings will possess a robust foundation in computing skills and knowledge, empowering them to utilise technology confidently and understand its implications in their daily lives.
They will have honed essential competencies in programming, digital literacy, and computational thinking, preparing them for future learning and potential careers in technology. Our curriculum aspires to inspire the next generation of programmers, designers, and innovators, fostering digitally literate, responsible, and creative problem-solvers. We measure success through enhanced student confidence, positive outcomes in assessments, and active engagement in enrichment opportunities such as digital leaders, coding clubs, and collaborative projects with local businesses.
This holistic approach not only demonstrates our commitment to academic excellence but also nurtures a genuine enthusiasm for computing, positioning our students as empowered architects of their digital futures.
