Staying Safe Online: A Guide for Parents

In today's digital world, children are growing up with technology at their fingertips. The internet offers amazing opportunities for learning, creativity, and connection, but it's essential that we, as parents and educators, guide them to navigate it safely.

At St John's Church School, your child's online safety is a top priority. We teach our children about responsible digital citizenship, including how to be kind online and how to protect their personal information. However, the most important lessons happen at home.

Here are some tips to help you keep your child safe in the digital landscape:

  • Talk openly about online safety: Create a safe space for your child to talk about their online experiences. Ask them about the games they play, the videos they watch, and the apps they use. Encourage them to tell you if they ever see something that makes them feel uncomfortable or worried.

  • Establish family rules: Work together to create clear guidelines for internet use. This can include setting time limits, choosing age-appropriate websites and apps, and deciding where devices can be used. For younger children, this might mean only using devices in a shared family space, like the living room.

  • Protect personal information: Teach your child to never share personal details online, such as their full name, home address, school name, or photos of themselves in their school uniform. Emphasise that they should never agree to meet someone they've only spoken to online.

  • Use parental controls: Take advantage of the parental control features available on devices, apps, and home Wi-Fi networks. These tools can help filter content, limit screen time, and track activity.

  • Model good behaviour: Children learn by example. Show them what it means to be a responsible and respectful digital citizen. This includes being mindful of what you post and share online and being kind in your interactions with others.

Together, we can help our children build the skills they need to enjoy all the wonderful things the internet has to offer, while staying smart and safe.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to the school. We are here to support you.
