ART
INTENT
At Paston Ridings, our art education is intricately woven into our vision of "changing lives and achieving excellence," cultivating an environment where students experience "life in all its fullness." We are dedicated to providing a transformative learning journey that nurtures creativity, self-expression and emotional well-being. Our art curriculum is founded on the belief that learning is life-transforming, enabling all students from EYFS to Key Stage 2 to flourish both personally and academically. Through the exploration of meaningful themes such as “What makes us who we are?” and “How do the choices we make impact the world?”, students will not only master artistic techniques but also develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and cultural awareness. By integrating art history, practical skills in drawing, painting, and sculpture and reflective practices, we aim to cultivate the whole child and inspire a commitment to "excellence for us all." We encourage whole-hearted growth and discovery, fostering relationships and a strong sense of community as students learn to creatively respond to the challenges of an ever-changing world.
IMPLEMENTATION
Art is taught through dynamic, hands-on, experiential learning that encourages exploration and innovation. Each student is provided with ample opportunities to research both contemporary and historical artists, connecting their knowledge of art history and cultural influences with practical skills in drawing, painting and sculpture. Lessons focus on the artistic process, emphasising exploration, experimentation and self-expression.
We integrate cross-curricular connections, particularly with history, to help students understand how art reflects and shapes our world. Our teaching is enhanced by diverse resources, including a wide array of art supplies, visual aids and smartboards, enriching the learning experience. Students regularly engage in self-assessment and peer assessment, cultivating a reflective mindset and deepening their understanding of their artistic journey.
Assessment methods are dynamic and focus on individual growth and development, valuing engagement with the creative process and the application of learned techniques and art vocabulary over mere finished products.
IMPACT
By the conclusion of their primary art education, students at Paston Ridings will emerge with strong creative expression, technical skills, and a profound appreciation for art and its significance in the world. They will be able to critically evaluate various artworks, understand diverse artistic techniques, and demonstrate a growing vocabulary related to drawing, painting, and sculpting. Their cultural awareness will expand as they explore a range of artistic traditions, fostering empathy and broadening their perspectives.
Our curriculum promotes innovation and problem-solving, enabling students to think critically and tackle challenges with resilience and creativity. As they enhance their fine motor skills and learn to manipulate tools with precision, students will experience increased self-esteem and confidence. Opportunities for self-expression through art will support their emotional well-being, providing a valuable outlet for articulating their ideas, thoughts and feelings. Furthermore, as students develop the ability to articulate and justify their opinions, our art education fosters collaboration and community-building.
The emphasis on cross-curricular learning, especially in history, allows students to connect their artistic insights to broader global contexts, enriching their overall educational experience. Enrichment activities such as workshops and in-school art competitions further inspire students to showcase their talents and engage in creative challenges, nurturing a robust sense of achievement and personal growth.
