The children have made a fantastic start to Year 6, settling in quickly in Tigers class. They have all been working exceptionally hard, demonstrating great enthusiasm for their learning, and are eagerly preparing for the SATs.
In Maths, we’ve been exploring different methods for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. The children have been learning a range of strategies to help them choose the most efficient method for each problem. This work is helping them build confidence and flexibility in their mathematical thinking as we prepare for the upcoming SATs.
In English, we have been exploring The Final Year by Matt Goodfellow, which inspired our narrative writing. The children imagined themselves as Nate on his first day in Year 6, describing his thoughts and feelings throughout the day. They produced some truly wonderful pieces of work that they are all very proud of. We have continued to develop their writing skills by focusing on sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary, helping them to express their ideas even more effectively.
In Curriculum, we have been exploring the driving question, ‘What makes us who we are?’ through our learning in History, Science, and PSHE.
In history, we have deepened our understanding of the ancient Mayan civilisation, exploring how their achievements and discoveries have influenced the world today. We have continued to build on our knowledge of chronology, confidently ordering key events on a timeline and identifying where the Maya fit in alongside other civilizations we have studied, such as the Romans, Anglo-Saxons, and Vikings. These connections have helped us to see how the legacies of past societies shape the people we are today. Our learning was brought to life through an exciting visit to Cadbury World, where we discovered how the Mayans’ love of chocolate has continued to impact our modern world. The children were absolutely delighted watching the 4D film on the history of chocolate — and, of course, enjoyed some delicious samples too!
In science, we have been investigating inheritance and evolution, learning about the fascinating ways our characteristics are influenced by both our genes and our environment. We studied the ground-breaking work of Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace, who developed the theory of evolution by natural selection. This helped us to understand how living things have adapted over time — and how these processes have contributed to making each of us unique.
In PSHE, our focus has been on preparing for secondary school, where we have explored how to manage change, navigate friendships, resolve conflict, deal with loss, and stay safe in both real-life and online spaces. We have also been setting SMART goals to help us work towards our ambitions with confidence and resilience.
It has been a fantastic first term in Year 6 Tigers — full of curiosity, reflection, and discovery — and we are excited to see what Autumn 2 will bring!
