What a busy start to Year 1 we’ve had! It’s been a fantastic first term in Year 1, full of exciting learning, new experiences, and lots of fun along the way!
In math's we’ve been exploring 2D and 3D shapes, spotting them all around our classroom and playground! The children have been practicing counting forwards and backwards to 10 and beyond, and they’ve loved joining in with number songs and games. We’ve also been learning about the days of the week — and we definitely know which day is our favorite!
As part of English we’ve read some brilliant stories together. One of our favorites was Mini Rabbit Gets Lost, which we retold in our own words and talked about how Mini Rabbit might have been feeling on his adventure. We also enjoyed Nikhil and Jay Save the Day — we read different chapters and linked them to our own lives. We thought about Pancake Day, times we might have forgotten something, and moments when we felt like we couldn’t do something — and how we felt better about it afterwards. Such wonderful discussions!
In Geography, we’ve been learning all about human and physical features in our local area. We can’t wait for our upcoming trip to the cathedral, where we’ll spot these features in real life — what a great way to bring our learning to life!
Our young scientists have been busy investigating different materials and their properties. We tested which materials would make the best coat, thinking about which ones are warm, waterproof, and comfortable. There were some very clever conclusions!
In Music, we’ve been listening to pop songs and learning about rhythm and pulse. We used our bodies to make music — clapping, clicking, and tapping — before playing along to a well-known tune with untuned instruments. The classroom was full of energy and rhythm!
We had a wonderful visit from Woodgreen Animal Shelter. They taught us all about how to look after a hamster and what these furry little friends need to stay happy and healthy. The children were full of thoughtful questions! It’s safe to say that Year 1 have had a fantastic and very busy start to the year — and we can’t wait to see what adventures await us next term!
