This term in Jaguars we have explored the driving question, ‘What makes us who we are?’ through learning about the ancient Mayan people in history, inheritance in science, and how to work through challenging situations in PSHE.
This was enhanced by our participation in the Difference project, where we explored the celebration of difference in society on many levels, and produced some excellent, thoughtful artwork capturing our thoughts.
Our history study has seen us fully develop an understanding of the difference between dates which are either before or in the Common Era; and we have gained confidence ordering dates chronologically. This has helped us to understand the context of our learning and make links to previous civilizations we have already learned about, like the Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and Romans. These have all left a legacy and this contributes to what makes us all who we are. This culminated in a visit to Cadbury world, where the history of chocolate, the Mayan’s most famous legacy, was our focus (as well as lots of free chocolate!)
As scientists we have explored the genetics of what makes us who we are, learning about the difference between inherited and environmental characteristics. We have learned about the work of Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace, who devised the theory of evolution. This knowledge helps us to further understand exactly what has contributed to the person we are today.
Our secondary school preparation has been the focus in PSHE, where we have developed a better understanding of how to deal with social situations, solve conflict, deal with grief, set smart goals, and stay safe online in a rapidly changing social landscape.
We have had a brilliant first term and are ready for Autumn 2!
