Please see up to date information regarding what to do if your child has symptoms of Covid 19 

Quick Guide for Parents: 

My child is unwell, what should I do? 

  • Adults and children are advised to try to stay at home and avoid contact with others if they have a high temperature or do not feel well enough to attend work or carry out normal activities.
  • They should resume normal activities once temperature is resolved and feel well enough to do so
  • Children and young people with mild symptoms eg runny nose but no high temperature can return to school.

Covid-19 Symptoms:

Symptoms of COVID-19 in adults and in children can include:

The symptoms are very similar to symptoms of other illnesses, such as colds and flu

  • a high temperature or shivering (chills) – a high temperature means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours
  • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste
  • shortness of breath
  • feeling tired or exhausted
  • an aching body
  • a headache
  • a sore throat
  • a blocked or runny nose
  • loss of appetite
  • diarrhoea
  • feeling sick or being sick

What if my child tests positive for COVID-19?

Some individuals may choose to test, either with residual free testing kits or via test kits purchased from pharmacies

  • Children and young people with a positive test should stay at home and avoid contact with others for 3 days. They can return to education after 3 days provided they have no high temperature and feel well
  • Adults who test positive should stay at home and avoid contact with others for 5 days. They can return to the workplace after 5 days provided they have no high temperature and feel well
